Not everyone needs to have their foot locked via multiple means to the sole of a cycling shoe. Shimano's SH-R220 has many of the features of the SH-R300, but with a more breathable and forgiving upper. The sole is still a stiff and light carbon fiber platform with excellent ventilation. The upper still has anti-slip heel lining lined with metal fiber to prevent heel slippage. And the upper still has one ratcheting buckle and two Velcro straps per shoe. The biggest difference is the reduced use of reinforcing materials and increased use of mesh, which should result in cooler feet on the hottest days.

Another great feature shared with the SH-R300 is the moldable insole. While plenty of stock insoles "mold" thanks to foot pressure, Shimano's is rare among stock insoles for being one that can be heated in a home oven and then molded around the foot by placing it inside the shoe and standing on it while hot. Added support is included with the box in the form of both arch and metatarsal pads. For the best molding results, you can get them vacuum-fitted at an Authorized Shimano footwear dealer.

The Shimano SH-R220 is built around the traditional three-hole cleat mounting pattern. The carbon fiber sole is vented to keep the foot cool. There are heel pads built into the sole for those times when walking is necessary. Reflective material is stitched into the heel as well as the toe and sides. Weight is 588g a pair (for size 40 shoes).
