Lactate is a naturally occurring organic compound produced in everyone’s body and is both a byproduct of and a fuel for exercise. It is found in the muscles, the blood, and various organs. Your body needs it to function properly. Lactate threshold is the point (measured by heart rate or wattage) at which the body can not “flush out” or use it as fast as it is being produced. This number is important to endurance athletes because it helps accurately establish training zones to optimize training benefits. Increasing your lactate threshold can increase your ability to hold higher power outputs and higher speeds for greater durations.
How does the test work?
The lactate threshold test will be performed on a CompuTrainer stationary bike, a bike that controls and monitors power output, cadence, speed and time. The test consists of increasing workload efforts in which heart rate, wattage, speed, and lactate levels are measured. When scheduling a testing time be prepared for the test to last roughly one hour for set up, warm up, and cool down.
For the most accurate results please refrain from the following before performing assessments:
Eating a meal within 3 hours.
Strenuous exercise within 24 hours.
Caffeine products within 12 hours.
Nicotine products within 3 hours.
Alcohol within 24 hours.
*All lactate threshold tests will include a copy of your current training zones, descriptions of each, and what you must do to achieve training effects you desire.
